Laser Acupuncture Improves Fertility Outcomes

This study caught my eye recently and I knew I had to share it with you. Although my family building is complete I get really excited about research that may help my clients. Laser acupuncture aka photopuncture, is becoming a popular option in the field of photobiomodulation for various aspects of women’s health, including relief for painful periods, inducing labor safely and improving fertility rates. An impressive study from Reproductive Medicine Associates of New Jersey underscores this growing trend. First of all they recruited 1,000 women (a great size for a study), and used laser immediately before and after embryo transfer with very impressive results.

What sets this study apart is its rigorous design—a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. This means that neither the acupuncturists nor the women knew if the laser acupuncture was real or a placebo, eliminating bias and making the results incredibly reliable. The findings? Laser acupuncture boosted implantation rates to 33.7% and birth rates to 42%, a significant improvement over traditional acupuncture, relaxation-only treatments, or no intervention at all.

And what was even more intriguing is that the laser didn’t touch the skin - but was still able to activate specific meridians associated with fertility - and no side effects. Traditional needle acupuncture had outcomes equivalent to the 3 control groups. The investigators also included a sub-analysis of the women’s age with similar findings with laser acupuncture enhancing IVF outcomes.

Photopuncture is also a lot quicker - usually only stimulating the points for 30-60 seconds per site.
